Key responsibilities:
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and protocols to maintain a safe working environment for all personnel
  • Implement safety training programs and conduct regular inspections to identify and address potential hazards
  • Develop production plans and schedules to optimize coal extraction while minimizing downtime and costs
  • Coordinate with engineering teams to plan mining methods, ventilation systems, and equipment maintenance schedules
  • Recruit, train, and supervise mining staff, including miners, engineers, and support personnel
  • Provide leadership and direction to promote teamwork, productivity, and morale among employees
  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of mining equipment to ensure proper functioning and minimize downtime
  • Coordinate with maintenance teams to prioritize repairs and replacements as needed
  • Develop and manage the budget for the underground coal mine, including operating expenses, equipment purchases, and capital investments
  • Monitor expenses and implement cost-saving measures where possible
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations governing coal mining operations, including waste disposal, reclamation, and water management
  • Implement measures to minimize the impact of mining activities on the surrounding ecosystem
  • Identify and assess operational risks, including geological hazards, equipment failures, and regulatory changes
  • Develop risk mitigation strategies and contingency plans to minimize disruptions to production
  • Maintain accurate records of production output, equipment performance, safety incidents, and environmental compliance
  • Prepare regular reports for management and regulatory agencies as required
Minimum requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Geology, or a related field
  • Mine Managers Certificate of Competency
  • 10 years experience in underground coal mining operations, with at least 5 years in a supervisory or managerial role
  • Strong knowledge of mining techniques, equipment, and safety protocols
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to analyze data, solve problems, and make sound decisions under pressure
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements governing coal mining operations
  • Proficiency in computerized mine planning and management software
