Job Summary The Health and Safety Officer will be responsible for ensuring that all waste management operations - from collection and transportation to landfill management, recycling, and hazardous waste handling - are conducted in full compliance with occupational health, safety, and environmental standards. The role ensures that risks related to handling waste, operating heavy equipment, and working in high-risk environments are effectively managed and mitigated. Key Responsibilities Develop, implement, and monitor health, safety, and environmental (HSE) programs tailored to waste management operations. Conduct risk assessments specific to waste handling, hazardous material exposure, landfill operations, and fleet activities. Carry out regular site inspections at landfills, transfer stations, recycling plants, and waste collection routes. Investigate incidents and near misses (e.g., vehicle accidents, chemical exposure, equipment hazards) and implement corrective action plans. Provide safety training to waste collection crews, drivers, landfill staff, and contractors on topics such as PPE, hazardous waste handling, emergency response, and environmental compliance. Ensure compliance with national and local waste management, environmental, and OHS legislation. Qualifications and Experience Higher Diploma or Degree in Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Waste Management, or equivalent qualification. 5+ years' experience as a Health and Safety Officer, preferably within waste sector.
