Job Summary MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:Lead major, minor and miscellaneous projects in the C&I Engineering function and/or managing professional C&I Engineering work involving independence in approach, demanding a considerable degree of originality, ingenuity and judgement, and knowledge of more than one field of, or expertise in a particular field of professional C&I Engineering.The Principal C&I Engineer is responsible for the progress and quality of assigned tasks within the C&I Engineering discipline, including the supervision of C&I Engineers and Junior C&I Engineers.Carry out all C&I engineering and design work in accordance with agreed codes and practices that meets all requirements of the contract. Also, to ensure all work is carried out within agreed schedules, budgets and procedures in a safe and sustainable manner.The Principal C&I Engineer is responsible to conduct work independently and in accordance with the Client’s requirements set out in the Technical Stewardship Standard (TSS) and demonstrate and exhibit a very high level of technical competence in the C&I engineering field, as well as technical co-ordination, planning, estimating and technical leadership.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Technical Expertise:
  • Provision of expert knowledge (discipline specific) to conceptual engineering, pre-feasibility (FEL2), basic engineering (FEL3), and detailed design. This includes the interpretation and application of relevant international and national codes and standards and client specifications.
  • Technical direction, advice and control of the C&I Engineering work on projects.
  • Liaison with customer discipline representatives to establish technical direction where not provided by the contract, nor in codes and standards.
  • Liaison with other project discipline Lead engineers on technical issues and engineering matters, including the provision of discipline specific advice on issues not covered by design codes or standards.
  • Development and improvement of company standards and design methods, including execution of work in conjunction with other key stakeholders.
  • Complete complex C&I design activities, which could include advanced analysis methods and publications in technical journals.
Project Execution and Proposal Development:
  • Lead C&I Engineering activities on major, minor and miscellaneous projects and/or provide expert level technical knowledge and guidance in all phases of projects (conceptual, pre-feasibility (FEL2), basic engineering (FEL3) and detailed engineering design and execution).
  • Establishing scope of work for each project or proposal.
  • Undertake C&I design activities required of the designation, including system and/or equipment calculations, C&I datasheets, engineering requisitions, C&I equipment lists, technical bid evaluations, C&I design criteria, input into the Basis of Design document, SEAL plan input, relevant design drawings and other project documents.
  • Support the National Discipline Manager to establish the scope of work for projects or proposals, including manpower schedules.
  • Schedule and expedite work assigned to the C&I Engineering team on projects.
  • Implement and administer the planning, scheduling, cost control and engineering governance to design during design phases of projects.
  • Review and approve technical documentation on projects related to C&I Engineering.
  • Review and comment on vendor data (including equipment and packages) for compliance to purchase order / contract requirements as well as to integrate equipment into the broader plant.
  • Identify and offer recommendations of new technology developments which will be applicable in providing more cost-effective facilities or solutions.
  • Ensure that at completion of projects, all technical documentation (including drawings, specifications, minutes of meetings, etc.) is collated, revised to as-built status and handed over to the Document Control archiving (i.e. complete and proper close-out of projects).
  • Co-ordination and preparation of input to essential C&I Engineering documents, as defined by the project Discipline Task and Deliverable Plan (DTDP).
  • Conduct regular customer visits where applicable to the field of Work.
  • Assist with business development activities and marketing.
Technical Stewardship and SEAL Compliance:
  • Ensure compliance with specified engineering codes, standards, procedures, quality plans and Client’s policies and procedures.
  • Undertake technical peer reviews of C&I Engineering work and deliverables on projects and providing remedial actions and recommendations for improvements.
  • Deliver technical assessments of tenders. Assisting in carrying out quality assurance audits of contractors and vendors.
  • Responsible for the delivery of HSE standards across specialist discipline, including demonstration of leadership in the delivery of safe and environmentally sustainable engineering solutions through SID manuals.
  • Responsible for personal safety and to adhere to safe working practices. Understand, implement and ensure that all legal requirements as required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act and/or the Mines Health and Safety Act are incorporated.
Financial / Cost Management:
  • Promote cost reduction and productivity enhancing initiatives, including the determination of relative costs of alternative design concepts and establishment of preferred concepts.
  • Manage man-hours of C&I Engineering teams on projects and ensure that quality work is completed on schedule within the available budget.
Staff Management and Performance:
  • Manage project staff workload and key deliverables in line with deadline requirement, scope and the Client’s procedures.
  • Regularly interface with departmental staff and upper management, and frequently with outside customers.
Learning and Development:
  • Responsible for his/her professional development as an engineer.
  • Act as mentor to more junior C&I engineers.
  • Knowledge sharing.
REQUIREMENTS OF THE ROLE:Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum BEng, BSc or BTech in related field or applicable discipline, typically Electrical Engineering (Light Current) or Electronic Engineering or equivalent experience if allowed by law.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer or Professional Engineering Technologist with ECSA.
Experience:
  • Minimum 12 years (BTech/BEng/BSc) or 10 years (MSc) of applicable post-qualification experience.
  • Experience in the Mining, Minerals and Chemicals, Hydrocarbons, Power and Public Infrastructure industries essential, across operations, design and project execution roles.

Physical Requirements of the Role:
  • Will be required to visit customer sites, supplier offices / workshops as well as construction sites.
  • Will be required to conduct inspections at supplier workshops, as well as conduct inspections on constructions sites.

  • May be required to travelling internationally to other Client offices, customer and / or supplier sites.
