Netwerk24 is looking for an experienced journalist with particularly excellent production experience for the position of national production editor. This includes digital production for Netwerk24, as well as language editing of Die Burger and Rapport on Netwerk24. The suitable person must demonstrate strong leadership qualities. Experience in managing a large editorial team will be to his/her advantage. The team being managed works in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Bloemfontein, Cape Town and other places in the country and is responsible for sub-editing, rewriting and page layout work.The suitable candidate will have the ability to effectively manage this team (as well as a network of freelancers) so that work is done seamlessly seven days a week, from early morning to late evening, across different platforms. Because Netwerk24 works digital-first, experience in that field will be essential. Things happen quickly and unexpectedly and decisions must be able to be made immediately - even outside normal working hours.The person must communicate with the various department heads, news editors, newspaper editors and the editor-in-chief. Besides nerves of steel, good communication skills are essential.Naturally, sub-editing and rewriting work is part of the position and the candidate will be expected to sometimes sub-edit or rewrite themselves to relieve pressure where necessary.This is a senior management position and the person reports directly to the editor-in-chief of Netwerk24.Duties
- Ensure that the team delivers sub-editing, rewriting and layout work that meets the highest journalistic standards to provide a quality product and help ensure that the publications fulfill their watchdog role in society through factual and ethical reporting that is compellingly written and packaged.
- Ensure that deadlines are met.
- Manage a team of sub-editors, freelancers and page designers in such a way that they function effectively and motivated in a stressful environment.
- Manage the shift schedules for the sub-editing teams for Netwerk24, Die Burger and Rapport.
- Stay abreast of news and daily events so that people are quickly directed in the right direction to do the most important work first.
- Strong leader who can manage a large team in a stressful environment

- Excellent language and sub-editing skills in Afrikaans
- A good news sense and feel for developing news that must be handled immediately

- Excellent sub-editor who can also quickly rewrite copy with the necessary knowledge of legal aspects and provisions of the Press Code
- An applicable tertiary qualification
- More than 10 years' experience in journalism, of which 5 must be in a production environment
- Management experience will be an advantage - especially if it was in an editorial environment
