The Steersman plays a critical role in escorting and guiding abnormal load vehicles carrying extremely large, heavy, and high-value cargo. This position requires a responsible, disciplined, and safety-focused individual who can remain calm and attentive for extended periods, often under demanding conditions. The Steersman leads the route, ensuring safe passage of the load from port, project sites, or other designated points, frequently across long distances and remote locations.Key Responsibilities:
- Drive the escort/pilot vehicle ahead of abnormal load trucks to ensure a clear and safe route.
- Maintain constant communication with the abnormal load driver, transport coordinator, and team via radio.
- Anticipate and identify potential risks (road hazards, sharp turns, overhead obstructions, narrow passes, or traffic) and communicate these promptly.
- Assist in managing traffic flow and warning other road users of the approaching abnormal load.
- Follow strict route plans, timing, and convoy procedures as instructed by the transport team.
- Safeguard valuable cargo by ensuring safety standards and escort protocols are followed at all times.
- Adhere to all road traffic regulations and abnormal load permit conditions.
- Remain focused and patient while driving at very low speeds (e.g., 10 km/h) over long distances.
- Undertake long periods away from home, including overnight stays in remote areas, sometimes sleeping in the vehicle when accommodation is not available.
- Demonstrate adaptability when meals, rest stops, or facilities are limited, including preparing food roadside if necessary.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip checks of the escort vehicle to ensure readiness.
- Uphold the companys reputation for professionalism, reliability, and safety at all times.
- Valid South African drivers license (Code 8/10; higher an advantage).
- Clean driving record with proven experience in long-distance driving.
- Previous experience as an escort/pilot driver for abnormal loads (preferred but not essential training may be provided).
- Ability to concentrate and remain alert for extended periods.
- Strong communication skills and ability to follow instructions precisely.
- Physically and mentally fit to cope with demanding road and environmental conditions.
- High level of patience, discipline, and situational awareness.
- Willingness to work irregular hours, weekends, and public holidays as required.
- Willingness to travel extensively and spend long periods away from home.
