- Perform the daily operational activities under the guidance of the senior inspector/operations supervisor / senior administrator or branch manager where applicable.
- Attend to various inspections, at various locations around South Africa. With, Cape Town region, being the key point for daily inspections
- Attend to fish meal, fish oil loading across the Cape Town region.
- Attend to loading or discharge of fish or frozen fish inspections.
- Witness fumigation of containers and record accurate information.
- Witness weighing over weigh bridges, scale, etc and recording all information accurately. Verify equipment.
- Ensure all correct, clean and sanitized equipment and consumables are taken for respective inspections.
- Attend on vegetable & palm oil vessels for supervision of discharge in accordance with FOSFA. Perform volume and tonnage calculations accurately on arrival, during and after discharge of vessel.
- Request for necessary documents and arrange equipment, sample labels, etc that is necessary for the inspection, prior to attending on site.
- Perform shore tank sampling, gauging and calculations in relation to temperature and related tonnage based on volume.
- Perform inspections/sampling on vessels loading or discharging grains or oilseeds in accordance with GAFTA/FOSFA requirements.
- Perform cleanliness and suitability inspections of containers, shore tanks, loading compartment inspections on ship tanks and ships holds.
- Perform sampling of frozen meat products in accordance with international standards, perform loading or discharge supervision of meat products.
- Attend to cold stores to perform inspection of frozen meat products for insurance / quality dispute purposes and issue field reports.
- Perform inspections (quality, quantity, etc) at various warehouse / cold stores for sampling of grains, oilseeds, meat, lucerne and other agricultural products.
- Witness/supervision of loading of agricultural products being stuffed or de-stuffed from containers. Witness weighing at various sites.
- Perform timber inspections in relation to various local and international standards.
- Travel around South Africa or where ever inspection may be required.
- Perform warehouse inspections in accordance with clients / banks requirements for risk surveys.
- Ensure prompt and accurate reporting of jobs to senior inspectors or clients (via “Whatsapp”, email, etc when requested.
- Ensure field reports are presented for all jobs attended. Ensure accuracy to details before submitting any information or field report to the office.
- Conveying of samples (acceptable quantity) and equipment to and from jobs, using own vehicles.
- Assist in maintenance of job files in conjunction with internal procedures/requirements. All hours, dates, travel, accommodation costs, overtime, etc to be documented in each job order file or presented to the senior inspector.
- Assist with capturing of field information / report preparations when no field operation is in progress - when required.
- Ensuring control of consumables. Ordering of consumables via senior inspectors or administrator/ store man, as required.
- Prepare samples in accordance with relevant standards and documentation for submission to laboratories or sample storage.
- Assist in maintaining the archived material (filing of job files) and equipment.
- Maintenance of sample storeroom and ensuring it is in a good and clean order.
- Logging of all samples, seals and equipment.
- Packaging and dispatch of samples to laboratories or clients.
- Perform any OI related duty that is assigned to you specifically or staff in general.
- Assist in continuously upgrading the quality of services offered, in support of the 'Customer Services' Policy and minimize client complaints and risk liabilities to SGS.
- Assist in setting up job and oversee any approved casual staff or subcontractor as and when required.
- Submit weekly hours, travel, etc
- Ensure adherence to International Standards (GAFTA / FOSFA / IFIA or other).
- Ensure adherence to standard operating and any internal procedures.
- Ensure adherence to company Code of Ethics, e-Mail policies, etc.
- Attend or perform training as and when required (on line, attendance or other).
- Submit monthly expense claims on due date via the Cape Town office.
- Working of shifts. Work will include, planned and unplanned weekend and public holiday work from time to time.
- Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system / and respective site/warehouse.
- Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by the direct line supervisor / manager or branch manager.
- Maintain a clean working environment. Adhere to the company “5 S” policy with all working areas.
- Adherence to treatment of confidential information.
- Apply Check status process and use the Stop Work Authority whenever the control of risks is not clearly established and understood, where applicable.
- Be compliant to all SGS Operational Integrity (OI -QHSE) and HR policies and procedures.
- At all times, comply with SGS Code of Integrity and Professional Conduct.
- Co-ordination and assist senior inspector/administrator, or operations supervisor / branch manager in performing required tasks.
- Report any faulty and/or nonfunctioning equipment to the immediate manager.
- Each staff member has the authority to cease the use of any equipment that may be deemed to constitute
- Report safety hazard and/or work that may affect the quality/safety of staff / equipment.
- Any person has the right to refuse to perform work that may damage the environment in an imminent and serious way and to report such a situation.
- Cease the use of any equipment that may be deemed to constitute a safety hazard or entry to hazardous environments without necessary knowledge and protection and take action to address the hazard.
- Cease to carry out work that may affect the quality (integrity) of services and take action to address the issue.
- Initiate a formal improvement request when a deviation of the system occurs, possible improvements are identified or when nonconformity is identified.
- Implementation and maintenance of the quality system/ procedures.
- Education - minimum grade 12 / Matric with mathematics and science as subjects.
- Must have valid drivers license (minimum code 08)
- Computer Literate (Microsoft Office, word, excel, etc)
- Experience in inspection, sampling of agricultural products and the fishing industry.
- Must be willing to travel long distances for inspections
- Must have own vehicle.
